What Are the Health and Mental Benefits of Mindfulness?

The movement in the western world is gaining more traction and acceptance among people from all walks of life. In countries like Thailand and Japan, where yoga is a primary staple of their culture, the movement has become popular and even mainstream. People there recognize the health benefits that come from being mindful of both the internal and external aspects of their lives. And why not?

When practicing mindfulness benefits from both physical and mental stretches, you are able to de-stress from your daily grind. You can rid yourself of stress hormones through meditation. In addition to that, meditative breathing helps in relieving tension, blood pressure, and other bodily disorders that contribute to an overall feeling of well-being. Scientific studies have shown that chronic anxiety and stress are related to abnormalities in the regulation of gamma-aminobutyric (GABA), an important neurotransmitter that facilitates relaxation and calmness.

Similarly, the movement acknowledges the unique contribution that our emotional response makes to the persistence and severity of both physical and mental illnesses. Studies in the field of neuroscience have revealed that the pathway to greater psychological and physical well-being is not through the regulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and endorphins but through the regulation of the neuroendocrine system, which includes the regulation of adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid function and activity. Greater attentiveness, which are a form of mindful communication and increased assertiveness can help increase these healthy neurotransmitters. Scientific research furthermore demonstrates that the mind/body connection to stress and anxiety can be strengthened through the practice of mindfulness, which is a state of relaxed awareness characterized by deep breathing, decreased mental stress and fatigue, greater assertiveness, and greater emotional intelligence and adaptability.

Aside from the aforementioned medical benefits of practicing mindfulness, there are also mental benefits that you can enjoy. People who are highly motivated are considered to be good listeners and are perceived as happier than those who are less motivated. Another aspect of this study is that those who are good listeners have higher IQs than those with high assertiveness and a low ability to listen. Also, people who are good listeners have lower cortisol levels and lower stress levels, which are all proven symptoms of better listeners.

In addition to the aforementioned physical and mental health benefits of mindfulness meditation, another area of research suggests that meditators exhibit improved memory, clearer thinking, enhanced creativity, greater emotional intelligence, better self-reflection, and greater resilience to disease. One of the common challenges for many people is thinking critically. Meditation trains the mind to focus attention on the moment at hand, which may make it easier to focus and process information better. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that mindfulness meditation helps reduce stress and anxiety, which are associated with poor cognitive functioning and a host of serious medical conditions, such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, and Parkinson’s disease.

The movement is quickly gaining popularity in North America, as more individuals are experiencing the many health, emotional, and spiritual benefits of being fully present. If you would like to explore this type of meditation, try Mindfulness workshops or mindfulness classes in your area. For more information, visit the website below.

People are also discovering that they can increase their IQ, enhance their creativity, decrease their stress and anxiety levels, and improve their relationship and communication with others by meditating. However, before you embark on a full-time meditation practice, it is best to speak with your doctor to ensure that you are healthy enough to take on a disciplined meditation practice. It is also important to remember that meditation is simply an exercise in awareness, which requires time, dedication and discipline to reap full benefits. While meditation does improve your brain function, there is much more to it than just being more aware.

Getting the Kids Active

As modern society progresses, it seems that more and more, people are taking up a more sedentary lifestyle. Hours upon hours sat in front of a screen, whether that be your phone, tablet or TV, so much time is spent sat down without much movement.

It becomes a greater concern when children of sedentary parents take on the habits of their mothers and fathers and themselves become used to a way of life sat in front of the TV.

There are plenty of things you can do to be more active, even as a busy mother. It can also be beneficial for your own health, as us girls are probably all aware of, as we get older, gravity becomes our enemy and certain parts of our bodies begin to droop.

Exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is just one of the ways we can prevent boob sag and keep all our parts in check and looking perky. Getting active with kids is a great way to do this, but we need to place protection on our breasts to ensure exercising doesn’t have the opposite effect that we want. A good sports bra or shelf bra can help aid this while we’re running around with our children and getting them active. If you’re interested in one yourself, follow this link.

Here are just a few simple changes to make to help get your kids active:

Walk to School

If you’re within a three mile radius of your kids’ school, it’s time to ditch the car and start the day with a brisk walk. Getting everything prepared the night before so you can just eat breakfast and get on your way is the most efficient way to ensure you’re not running around like a headless chicken to get there on time.

A three mile walk shouldn’t take you more than an hour if you quit any messing around. Power-walking can get you there quicker, while raising your heart rate slightly and getting in some extra steps.

Join a Family Sports Club

The most fun way to get active is to engage in a new hobby together, if you’re wanting to get active, a sports club or activity is the perfect way to spend time together and get moving while you do so.

Joining an adult-child mixed sports team can help to get active while having fun and bonding. Or take your kid/s to a tennis or basketball court for some one on one activity.

Make it a Challenge

Most smartphones these days have step counters, or a cheap activity tracker can be bought to measure steps and activity. Set your family challenges to compete with each other for the most steps walked or the most active minutes.

Have a little prize on hand every week to award to the ‘winner’ and turn getting active into a little competition. Remember to keep it fun and don’t get too caught up in who the actual winner is. Everyone’s a winner when everyone is getting active and improving their lives.

Whatever you decide to do to get active, make sure everyone stays safe and you’ll begin to see the improvements in your health very quickly!
