We are all aware that regardless of skin type experts say natural skincare is the best for our skin, but why exactly is this the case? We have compiled a list of benefits for natural skincare products to help you make an informed decision about what exactly you use on your skin.
- Better for the environment
Health and beauty products are manufactured using chemicals which consequently enter our atmosphere and water, damaging the environment on a wide scale. Natural health and beauty products are farmed and manufactured organically, resulting in fewer chemicals entering the air or water.
- No strange side effects
Often the chemicals and artificial colours in unnatural products can cause irritation and redness. They have even been reported to cause headaches and more people are allergic to the chemicals. Some people are also allergic to natural ingredients, but the effects of these are much more understood. For those with sensitive sin, additives like fragrances, preservatives and colourings should be avoided entirely.
- Better in the long run
Some unnatural products do appear to work better initially than natural products, however, the natural products often work better in the long term. If you are patient you can really start to see results from natural products, while the chemicals that are making your skin clearer or your hair smoother, may actually be causing damage.
- Be aware of exactly what you are putting on your skin
There are few government regulations about what ingredients can be used in health and beauty products, leaving many unaware about what exactly they are putting on their skin. What we put on our skin is absorbed into the body and we should be just as aware of what is being absorbed into our skin as what we are eating. Toxins from these unnatural products are passed easily into your body but don’t leave as easily. Janet Pardo, senior vice president of product development for Cinque, insists “your skin is your biggest organ, and it must be tended to.” Companies such as Tropic Skincare use ‘honest labelling’ believing “what you put on your skin should never be a mystery, therefore we list all our ingredients in plain English…so you know exactly what’s in your product, and that you’re applying only the freshest ingredients to your skin.”
- Use mineral make up
Once you’ve established a natural skincare routine that works for you it is important to be aware of what make up you are using. If you want to take care of your skin it is just as important to use mineral make up as it is to use natural skincare products. Mineral make up is more gentle on the skin which is why it is recommended to patients after cosmetic surgery, chemical peels or laser resurfacing. Mineral make up uses fewer chemicals and contains certain ingredients such as zinc oxide that have a calming soothing effect on the skin. It is more breathable and doesn’t block pores.
Everyone’s skin is different, you need to find the skincare that works for you. Remember it can take longer before you see results with natural skincare so be patient and don’t give up if you don’t see changes straight away.
